if its a simple square or rectangle shape, with 4 straight sides you simply decide wether to measure in feet and inches, or in metres and centimetres and multiply the length with the width. so if your room is 10' long and 8' wide you multiply 8 x 10 = 80sq.m. easy. take your measurements with you to ensure that their rolls are wide enough if you have a large room.
if the room is an odd shape its slightly more complicated, but you can draw a rough sketch, showing the shape of the room and put the correct measurement on each wall and take it to the shop with you.

Width x Length = Square (metres or Yards)
Square yards = you are measuring the area in feet and remaining inches
Square Metres = You are measuring the area in metres and remaining centimetres
Measure the room size, measure the longest distance, this includes measuring into the furthest areas such as bay windows, alcoves doorways e.t.c.
Don't worry about calculating the total square yard / metre of your home. This is why there are jobs for estimators. They can work out from your sizes the amount of carpet required. Give the sizes to the shop and they will calculate the total carpet required. This is the easiest option, and saves any mistakes. Carpet comes in either 4 or 5 metre widths as standard, what the estimator will do is plan to reduce the waste carpet as much as possible in order to provide you with the cheapest quote.
